Le Diamant

II. The diamond

What determines the price of the diamond?

The price of diamonds is directly related to their quality and rarity. These are based on the 4Cs. See how to judge the quality of a diamond here

Are diamonds a wise investment today?

Yes. The diamond is a good investment because its price increases regularly. Similarly, although there are still possibilities of discovering new mines or extraction areas, supply will not increase significantly over the next few years while demand is growing every year. In a context of global growth, with a growing middle class and the enrichment of new populations, demand is growing faster than supply. In this context, the price of diamonds is therefore on the rise.

To find out about our diamond investment solutions, please contact us by e-mail at contact@lapisluminis.com or by phone or WhatsApp at +41 78 79 57 45

How to judge the quality of a diamond?

It is advisable to refer to the 4 main criteria for evaluating the diamond (the 4Cs) which are the color, the clarity, the cut and the carat. To find out more, we invite you to consult our Diamond Guide

Are Lapis Luminis diamonds natural?

Yes, all the stones we offer are natural, none come from laboratories. The diamonds offered by Lapis Luminis are completely natural and have not been treated as to their color or their clarity.

What is a certification institute?

A certification institute independently assesses the quality of a gemstone. It then issues a certificate on which all the important criteria for grading a gem are stated. In this way, it protects the buyer and the seller by stopping any discussion that may arise around the quality of a gemstone.

We strongly encourage our customers never to acquire a diamond without certification. Moreover, at Lapis Luminis, all diamonds over 0.50 carat are accompanied by a GIA certification.

What is the GIA?

The GIA or Gemmological Institute of America is the most reputable and recognized grading institute in the world. It evaluates every diamond according to several criteria, including the 4Cs, to issue a certificate which then becomes its passport.

At Lapis Luminis, all diamonds over 0.50 carat are accompanied by a GIA certificate

Do you work with other diamond certification institutes?

No, although it is possible to do so at the request of the customer. It should be noted, however, that white diamonds assessed by other institutes, the best known being HRD and IGI, will be systematically penalized slightly in the trade against stones provided with a GIA certification.

Indeed, the GIA is considered the most rigorous and important institute today. Choosing “all GIA” is an additional guarantee of quality that La Maison offers to its customers.

What is the color of a diamond?

White diamonds have differences in hue ranging from colorless to light yellow or light brown. These color variations are organized on a scale from the letter D to the letter Z, so a D-color diamond will be colorless while a Z-color diamond will be light yellow or light brown.

In its engagement ring configurator, Lapis Luminis offers colors D, E, F, G and H, rated colorless or nearly colorless by the GIA. So you have the certainty of acquiring a high grade white diamond, rare and therefore precious.

To find out more, we invite you to consult our Diamond Guide

What is the clarity of a diamond?

Natural diamonds are created under very high temperature and pressure conditions. It is therefore common for inclusions to form during this process.

The analysis of these inclusions makes it possible to differentiate the diamonds into 11 grades ranging from Flawless, (perfectly pure with a magnifying glass) to I3 (included). Precious stones with the fewest inclusions are considered the most valuable because they are the rarest.

In its engagement ring configurator, Lapis Luminis offers the clarity grades IF, perfectly pure under the magnifying glass, VVS, very very slightly included, VS, very slightly included, and SI1, slightly included. Therefore, you will not have a diamond with inclusions visible to the naked eye.

To find out more, we invite you to consult our Diamond Guide

What is the cut for a diamond or gemstone?

Gemstones can be cut into different shapes. Although the so-called "brilliant" round cut is the most requested because it maximizes the brilliancy of the white diamond, other shapes, pear, cushion, emerald cut, hearts and others are available.

In addition to the shape of the stone, the execution of the cut is evaluated. Indeed, the GIA assesses the quality of the cut on a scale of 5 grades, ranging from excellent to mediocre.

In its engagement ring configurator, Lapis Luminis offers 7 different diamond cuts. You can directly choose the one you like the most on the personalization screen.

Also, when selecting your diamond, our gemologists systematically choose stone sizes rated excellent or very good, which correspond to the two highest grades of the GIA.

To find out more, we invite you to consult our Diamond Guide

What is the carat?

The carat is the gems weight unit. One carat corresponds to 200 thousandths of a gram or 0.2g

In its engagement ring configurator, Lapis Luminis offers several minimum weights for your diamond starting at 0.50 carat. Clearly, if you select the 1.00 carat option, your diamond will weigh at least 1.00 carat.

The weight of the diamond also determines its volume, a stone weighing 1.00 carat is heavier than a gem displaying 0.70 carat and thus offers larger dimensions.

It should also be noted that the weight of diamonds is not evenly distributed in nature, a 2.00 carat stone is not simply twice as rare as a 1.00 carat diamond. Indeed, the more a stone weighs, the rarer it becomes.

To find out more, we invite you to consult our Diamond Guide

What are the combinations of the 4Cs offered by Lapis Luminis?

Lapis Luminis offers in its engagement ring configurator 4 combinations of color and clarity:

Firmament: Color D, Clarity IF

Galactic: Color F, Clarity VVS

Stellar: Color G, Clarity VS

Planetary: Color H, Clarity SI1

These combinations make it easier to match color and clarity by proceeding in stages. Indeed, if you choose a "Stellar" combination, our gemologists then select a diamond of at least G color, at least VS clarity. Depending on the market and the evaluation guarantees of the secondary criteria, it is therefore possible that you will receive a jewel set with a better quality diamond (for example a G VVS) but it is impossible to receive a lower quality diamond.

Once the color and clarity have been selected, you can choose the cut from the 7 offered.

Finally, you can choose the weight of the main diamond of your engagement ring. We also proceed in stages. Selecting a weight of 1.00 carat ensures you receive a diamond weighing at least 1.00 carat.

Therefore, by selecting those 3 criteria and a precious metal, you have personalizedyour engagement ring.

Do you offer diamonds over 3.00 carats?

Yes, on request. Do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail at contact@lapisluminis.com or by phone or WhatsApp at +41 78 793 57 45

Do you offer other combinations of color and clarity?

Yes, on request. Virtually every combination exists. For example, you may want a very high color grade diamond with a number of inclusions that makes sense to you. At Lapis Luminis, nothing is impossible.

Do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail at contact@lapisluminis.com or by phone or WhatsApp at +41 78 79 57 45

Do you offer fancy color diamonds?

Do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail at contact@lapisluminis.com or by phone or WhatsApp at +41 78 79 57 45

What is a fancy color diamond?

When we think of diamonds, we usually think of white diamonds, nevertheless they exist in every color of the rainbow. Some colors are more desirable than others, but today with Lapis Luminis  there is a possibility to quickly find (almost) any type of color.

Do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail at contact@lapisluminis.com or by phone or WhatsApp at +41 78 79 57 45

Do fancy color diamonds are also graded following the 4Cs?

They meet 3 criteria of the 4Cs. Indeed, they have their own color scale which is based on hue, tone, saturation and distribution. Otherwise, they meet the criteria of clarity, size and weight (the other 3 Cs) like white diamonds.

Are fancy color diamonds natural diamonds?

Yes. At Lapis Luminis, every diamond is natural and has not undergone any color or clarity treatment.

Are fancy color diamonds accompanied by a certificate?

Yes. At Lapis Luminis, any diamond over 0.50 carat is provided with its GIA certificate. This institute remains the most renowned for the evaluation of fancy color diamonds.

What are the origins of Lapis Luminis' diamonds?

The diamond is the only precious stone whose origin does not influence its price. Provenance is not assessed or listed on the GIA certificate. However, the major diamond producers are Russia, Botswana and Canada. South Africa, Australia and Brazil are also major producers.

What is a blood diamond?

It is a diamond from a conflict zone whose trade allows political groups to support a violent effort. Lapis Luminis is committed to exemplary provenances by only working with partners who subscribe to the conditions of the Kimberley Process.

What is the Kimberley Process?

The Kimberley Process is a joint effort of states and diamond market traders to control the origin of their diamonds. Under the leadership of the United Nations, this process puts in place different procedures to certify that the stones do not come from a conflict zone

It is any other gem apart from the 4 precious stones (Diamond, Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby). In this category we find, among others, tourmalines, aquamarines, peridots, spinels, garnets, citrines, quartz, etc.

What is the difference between a fine stone and a semi-precious stone?

None, however the name semi-precious stone is no longer used because it is considered misleading.

Does Lapis Luminis offer Gemstones?

Métaux Précieux

V. Precious Metals

What are the precious metals offered by Lapis Luminis?

Lapis Luminis offers its customers white gold, yellow gold, rose gold and platinum for all of its projects. On request, we can offer creations in titanium.

What is a metal of ethical origin?

A metal is considered of ethical origin if it is labeled as such (that is to say attesting to an extraction respectful of human rights and the environment) or if it comes from a recycling process. As it is possible to melt gold and platinum virtually ad infinitum without altering their quality, these methods short-circuit a sometimes unscrupulous and opaque market.

Lapis Luminis is committed to ensuring that every creation is made entirely using ethical metals. Go here to find out more.

What is an alloy?

An alloy is a mixture of several metals. This notion is useful for understanding why gold is expressed in carats and platinum in thousandths.

What is the carat for gold?

The carat for gold, whose abbreviation is ct or kt, is useful to know the proportion of pure gold in the alloy of the precious metal. 24kt gold (read 24 carats) is pure gold (100%) while 18kt gold means an alloy where gold represents three quarters of the metal (75%).

Lapis Luminis only uses 18kt (or 18ct) gold for its creations

Why not use 24kt gold for Lapis Luminis' creations?

For solidity issues. Indeed, pure gold (or five nines, at 99.999%) is malleable. By adding other metals such as copper or silver in a proportion not exceeding 25%, gold is greatly solidified and wearable for daily use.

What is the difference between white gold and gray gold?

None, these are two interchangeable terms. For the sake of clarity, Lapis Luminis only uses the denomination white gold

What is 18kt white gold?

18kt white gold is an alloy composed of 75% pure gold and 25% silver or palladium. To bring out its brilliance, it is common to cover the jewel with a thin layer of rhodium (rhodium plating).

Over time, white gold may tarnish slightly. We invite you to contact Lapis Luminis for a cleaning service and a new rhodium plating. Your jewel will thus regain all its brilliance. This operation will incur a cost that Lapis Luminis will communicate to you for validation.

Do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail at contact@lapisluminis.com or by phone or WhatsApp at +41 78 79 57 45 to find out more.

What is 18kt yellow gold?

18kt yellow gold is an alloy composed of 75% pure gold, 12.5% silver and 12.5% copper. With this mixture the gold retains its recognizable yellow tint while drastically improving its hardness.

What is 18kt rose gold?

18kt rose gold is an alloy composed of 75% fine gold, 20% copper and 5% silver.

Is there a hallmark for the composition of gold?

Yes, the hallmark "750" in the body of the ring or somewhere discreet on your jewel attests to the proportion of pure gold in the alloy (750 for 75% of pure gold means 18kt gold). In Switzerland, this hallmark is mandatory and present on every Lapis Luminis' creation.

Do you add nickel to your gold alloys?

No, at Lapis Luminis we do not add nickel to our alloys.

What is platinum 950?

Unlike gold, whose proportion is expressed in carats (kt), the proportion of platinum is expressed in thousandths. Thus, platinum 950 is an alloy composed of 95% platinum and 5% of another metal (such as palladium, titanium, copper or more rarely iridium, ruthenium or rhodium).

Is there a hallmark for the composition of platinum?

Yes, the hallmark "950" in the body of the ring or somewhere discreet on your jewel attests to the proportion of pure platinum in the alloy. In Switzerland, this hallmark is mandatory and present on every Lapis Luminis' creation.

Should I choose 18kt gold or 950 platinum?

Neither metal is inherently superior to the other. Apart from the color (the platinum will indeed always be gray), we can however bring you some elements to help you make your decision. If you prefer maximum brilliance, you should choose white gold, if you want to base your decision on solidity, we recommend platinum.
